One-Day Phillip Island Itinerary: Must-See Spots and Tips

Phillip Island, located off the south coast of Victoria, Australia, is a beautiful destination with stunning landscapes, lively wildlife, and some adventure. This past February, at the height of the Australian summer, my friends and I decided to go there for a quick coastal getaway.

Phillip Island is best explored over several days to experience all it has to offer fully. However, I have created this guide for those who can only spare one day, as sometimes a day is all we have. Even penguins have tight schedules!

This one-day itinerary is packed with must-see spots and essential tips to make the most of your visit. From soaking up the sun on pristine beaches to witnessing the charming penguins return home at dusk. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or simply looking to escape the hustle and bustle, this guide will help you discover the island's hidden gems and must-visit attractions.

How to get to Phillip Island

Wondering how to get to Phillip Island from your Melbourne hotel? Phillip Island is connected to the mainland via a bridge so it is best and easily accessed by car. Getting around with your car is also the best way to stop by as many scenic spots and eateries along the way.

From Melbourne by car:

Depending on road closures and traffic conditions, the drive from Melbourne to Phillip Island takes about 90 minutes or more. Take the Monash Freeway (M1) from Melbourne and the South Gippsland Highway (M420) to reach the bridge to Phillip Island. Keep in mind that there are tolls on the Monash Freeway, so be prepared for that as well. Once you cross the bridge onto Phillip Island, you can easily explore the island at your own pace.

From Melbourne via Public Transportation

V/Line Coach to and from Melbourne operates daily, providing a convenient and reliable way to travel between Melbourne and regional Victoria. I recommend downloading the Public Transport Victoria App or visiting www.ptv.vic.gov.au

Go to Plan > Journey Planner. Enter your starting point and destination. It will provide the stops, routes, destinations, schedules, estimated travel time, and fare details. Use this website or app to estimate how much to top up your Myki card before your trip.

Starting Your Phillip Island Itinerary

The island is not that far from Melbourne CBD but I would still highly suggest starting early to maximize your day.

First stop: San Remo Pelican Feeding

The first destination is San Remo which is the closest town to Phillip Island. It's a fishing village and is popularly known for its Pelican Feeding, where you can watch these majestic birds being fed daily at 12 pm

Ideally, you should arrive in San Remo before 12 noon so you can check out the nearby cafes and restaurants for a quick brunch. Or visit the other spots in this itinerary before 12 noon. There are also several tables near the Pelican Feeding area so you can also a have picnic with friends.

Tip: Beware of the birds! Seagulls, crows, and magpies in Australia are quite a menace. Just don't give them a piece of what you're eating or else they will not stop until they get what they want. It's best to keep a close watch on your food when you're outdoors in areas where these birds are known to be a nuisance.

Next stop: Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre

After watching the Pelican Feeding in San Remo, the next stop is Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre which is about a kilometer away from the bridge at San Remo. If you need help with itinerary planning, you can ask their staff for information about the major attractions, tickets, maps, and more.

Next stop: Forrest Caves

Forrest Caves are sea caves formed by erosion of the cliffs over many years. Please note that it can only be explored and accessed at low tide so be careful of changing tides and waves.

Next stop: Phillip Island Wildlife Park

This is by far one of the best stops to experience Australian wildlife up close. There are over 100 species of Australian animals in the sanctuary. You can hand-feed kangaroos, wallabies, and see koalas in their natural habitat. Don't miss the opportunity to interact with these amazing animals and learn more about them from the park staff.

Next stop: Smiths Beach / Smiths Point Lookout

Smiths Beach and Smiths Point Lookout are perfect for taking in stunning coastal views and enjoying some beach time. It's also a popular surfing spot. Whether you want to relax on the sand, go for a swim, or simply admire the scenery, this is a great spot to unwind and appreciate the natural beauty of Phillip Island.

Next stop: Nobbies Ocean Discovery Centre

Explore the 500-meter winding boardwalks and take in the scenic coastal vistas of the Bass Strait. You'll also have the opportunity to admire the Nobbies rock formations and catch a glimpse of Seal Rocks, the residence of Australia's biggest fur seal colony.

Next stop: Red Rocks Beach

This beautiful and secluded beach is known for its red rock formations and calm waters, making it a perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Final stop: Cowes Beach

Cowes Beach is a popular destination for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the beautiful sunset. It's a great way to end your day on Phillip Island before heading back.

Recommend stop: Penguin Parade

Phillip Island penguins arrive at sunset every evening so this may not be possible if you have to return to Melbourne early. However, if you have the opportunity to stay for the night on Phillip Island, I recommend including this to watch the penguins waddle up the beach to their burrows.
