Discovering City Basement Books

My friends and I decided to split up when we were in Melbourne CBD. While wandering around the shops in Flinders Station, I suddenly remembered an article I've read before about a basement bookshop near the station. Luckily for me, I was literally 50 meters away from the shop when I searched Google Maps!

After seeing their overhead shop sign, I immediately noticed the stairs going below. "Ahh, a city basement indeed, "I thought to myself.

Walking down the stairs into the store, I was instantly surrounded by the cozy and welcoming vibe. The faint scent of aged paper and the sight of towering shelves filled with books created an ambiance that felt both nostalgic and exciting. I loved that there were so many books, some were stacked on the couch, and carpet, and some were even stacked on the cashier counter. There were so many books, that I couldn't see the staff behind them.

I loved that everyone was just busy reading, not noticing me as I navigated the extensive collection, which ranged from classic literature to contemporary novels. The shop layout, with its cozy nooks and crannies, encouraged exploration.

I didn't know what I was looking for, to be honest. I was simply searching for a book that would evoke memories of Melbourne when I returned home. Eventually, I stumbled upon the Travel section and sifted through numerous titles. I ended up taking an interest in a book about a woman's escapades in Italy, encompassing love and food. I couldn't help but laugh because just a few days earlier, I had been on a date with an Italian man. I decided to buy the book because if I couldn’t get a romantic rendezvous in Rome, I’d settle for a literary escapade that came with a side of delicious food and none of the awkwardness!

How to go to City Basement books

  1. City Basement Books is just a short walk from Flinders Street Station.
  2. The bookstore is situated at 342 Flinders Street. It is located in a basement space, so look for the overhead sign indicating the entrance.
  3. Once you find the entrance, walk down the stairs to access the bookstore.
This journey is very short and should take no more than a few minutes on foot. Enjoy your visit to this cozy second-hand bookstore!
